Sugar
Yet another cliché of a story about an underdog athlete just waiting for the opportunity to conquer [insert sport here] that ends with said athlete finally accomplishing that goal? Not exactly. Miguel “Sugar” Santos (Algenis Perez Soto) is brought from living in poverty as a 19 year old in the Dominican into a tour of middle America. The film plays as more of an immigrant, stranger in a strange land tale than the typical sports banality, as Sugar confronts his new environment. Without too harshly spoiling the turns in his career things don’t turn out perfectly as the writing/directing duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck defy formula at nearly every turn.
